Lunar Love

March’s new moon is called the Planting Moon since spring is the best time for planting many common veggies, herbs, and fruits. More moisture in the top layers of the soil during every new moon (due to the moon’s gravitational pull – think tides!) encourages growth.

It’s the perfect time to plant your intentions. If this idea is new to you and you want to explore it more deeply, check out these links:  Set New Moon IntentionsRituals for ManifestationMoon Rituals, and Lunar Abundance.

The phases of the lunar cycle as well as the creative cycle correspond to the life cycle of a plant. Think about the power (nutrients & energy density) packed into tiny edible seeds like sunflower, pumpkin, and sesame. The seed phase is associated with ideas, wishes, or projects that are ready to be planted so they may come into fruition.  New or old, your heart’s desires are planted in the fertile soil of our imagination when we set our intentions at the new moon.

Lunar Phases & the Creative Process

At the very beginning of any creative process, an idea, a spark, or a burst of possibility comes from somewhere. Is it a wave collapsing into a particle in the quantum soup, a whispering from the muses, or the idea as a consciousness in itself tugging at your sleeve? Rabbit holes full of authors have theories, so I’ve provided some quotes I associate with the Lunar and Creative processes.

All pleasure in creating begins with this sense of unlimited possibility.  In recognizing that treasures are everywhere.  Our job is to gather them up and give them a voice.

New Moon: Seed. Intention. Imagination. Wishes!

Crescent Moon: Sprout. Action. Inspiration. Stride.

Once you have taken some action on a creative project, the time comes for discernment. What parts and pieces of the project can survive the arduous journey from your head to the physical realm? Let joy be your guide.

Find what brings you joy and go there. That is your place to create, to move with the spirit, for the Muse lingers near the home of your joy.

~ Jan Phillips, Marry your Muse

1st Quarter Moon: Growth. Confrontation. Motivation. Discernment.

Gibbous Moon: Bud. Evoke. Perspiration. Trust.

The creation takes form! It’s happening. It isn’t all pretty… birth is messy! Creating is frustrating and fun. It is tedious and exciting!

I believe that each work of art, whether it is a work of great genius or something very small, comes to the artist and says, “Here I am. Enflesh me. Give birth to me.”

~ Madeleine L’Engle

Full Moon: Flower. Reception. Relaxation. Gratitude.

Disseminating Moon: Fruit. Release. Celebration. Sharing.

It exists outside of you. You can stand back and look at it, share it, appreciate the form and the process. You collaborated with an unknown source to bring this into the world, and now you are probably tired. So was the idea when you finally acted on it!

Ideas spend eternity swirling around us searching for available and willing human partners.

~ Elizabeth Gilbert, Big Magic

3rd Quarter Moon: Harvest. Reflect. Abundance.

Balsamic Moon: Compost. Heal. Integration.

Now what?

Boredom always precedes a period of great creativity.

~ Robert M. Pirsig

Dark Moon: Emptiness. Shadow. Dormancy.
